good times
Free Comic Book Day yesterday was a lot of fun! The store’s owner, Pat, said that it was the busiest and most successful one they’ve had.
-By 2:00 pm all copies (around fifty) of Tales #22 were sold. Pat was pretty impressed that I could move them like that! That means those issues raised over $200 for the Saskatoon Friendship Inn.
Over half of the people in my crowd during the course of the day were kids, which was fun. I asked most of them who their favourite turtle is, and Leonardo won out by a wide margin. Huh. When I was a kid everyone loved Michelangelo.
-Scott Bevin and Kent Earle of White Ninja fame are cool guys. I got two of their books, and they also gave me a page of doodles they had been doing. It has random things on it like a Ninja Turtle, Krang, Jughead, Tom Hanks reading “The Da Vinci Code,” and Sailor Moon. The Sailor Moon one is the most hilarious because they did it in a manga-parody style.
-I have now been introduced to the world of acquiring comic book sketches, and I see why it can be addictive! It’s much more fun than just plain old autographs (like mine). Tom Grummett did sketches for people at $20 a pop. He definitely raised more than twice the amount I did for charity. Sketches of Spider-Man were the most popular. I myself got a Kon-El Superboy, which I wanted because Tom was the first artist for that Superboy and since the character died recently. A funny one was commissioned by Scott and Kent - Superman eating corn. Another funny one was teenage Zatanna saying, “Ekil Revetahw.”
And that’s all folks. My commentary on Tales #22 is forthcoming, but might take a while because my computer needs to go into the shop for some tinkering.
